Crab Nebula composite, a colour photograph from old data
Tags: Crab Nebula, Crab, Nebula, NGC 1952, M1
This image made from plates taken by Walter Baade in 1942 on the 100-inch Mt Wilson telescope. Years ago it was widely published (mostly in textbooks) as four-image B&W composite, with wavelength labels. A good copy of this composite, obtained from Hale Observatories was assembled into a 3-colour image by David Malin, Jan 2009. It may be the first true-colour astronomical image from data of this vintage.
