AAT dome and utilities building, aerial view

Tags: N/A

The distinctive AAT dome dominates the image, with part of the Warrumbungle range on the horizon. The ANU utilities building and workshop is on the left, and smaller buildings are ANU offices and the fire station. The site is at an altitude of about 1200 metres (the same altitude as the aircraft!), and the dome is 50 metres high and over 36 metres in diameter. It is a a conspicuous local landmark on the edge of the warrumbungle National Park. The Park itself is a heavily weathered ancient volcano and is Australia’s first Dark Sky Park, recognising and protecting the sky above Australia's prime optical observatory.
